Johnston’s LLC uses forestry mulching to turn thick underbrush, saplings, and overgrown tree lines into a layer of mulch that stays right where it falls. It’s a fast, low-impact way to open up woods, reclaim fence lines, and make overgrown land usable again. It’s one of the most popular ways to manage wooded land in the Delmarva Peninsula.

A forestry mulcher cuts and grinds standing vegetation in a single step. Instead of cutting, hauling, and piling brush, the material is shredded on the spot and spread across the ground, where it protects the soil and breaks down over time.
Much of the Peninsula sits on sandy soil with a high water table, so heavy digging and stump pulling can leave a property rutted and prone to washing out. Mulching leaves the root systems and topsoil in place, which suits this kind of ground.
Need the ground completely open for building? Full land clearing takes out stumps and roots as well. For fields and lots with lighter growth, brush cutting is often all it takes.

My wife and I had Alex, owner/operator do several projects for us and have already talked with about another project in the Fall. I couldn’t say enough great things about him. We recently moved into the area and obtained his contact information from a neighbor. He was prompt, had great prices and always went over and above on each project. Alex is completely trustworthy, personable, honest and the hardest working young man I’ve dealt with in a while. You can’t go wrong hiring him for any type of work. Mark & Joyce M. (Crisfield, MD)
Common questions from landowners considering forestry mulching for their property.
Forestry mulching uses a machine with a rotating cutting head to grind trees, brush, and vegetation into mulch in place. It clears and cleans up in one step, with no hauling or burning.
Mulching grinds material down to around ground level, but the root systems stay in place. If you need the ground completely stump-free for building or grading, we can pair mulching with stump grinding.
Mulching is best suited to brush, saplings, and small to mid-size trees. Larger trees are usually cut down first and handled separately. We’ll walk the property and tell you what makes sense.
No. The mulch layer protects bare soil from erosion, holds in moisture, and breaks down naturally over time. Many landowners choose mulching specifically because it’s gentler on the ground.
That depends on what was growing and how the land is maintained afterward. The mulch layer slows regrowth, and many owners follow up with periodic brush cutting or a light second pass to keep the area open for years.
